In a webinar held on February 27th, Michael Salomon and Stefan Wagmeister from partner Austrian Standards (ASI) explained the role of standardization. The session aimed to present the process of standardization and its importance in making the results of Research & Innovation Projects, like Reincarnate, accessible to a diverse audience.
Standardization ensures compatibility and interoperability, which is crucial in advancing overarching goals. For Reincarnate, comprehending the relevance of standards for our innovative system and navigating the application process is relevant. Additionally, there is potential value in contemplating the initiation of revising existing standards or establishing new ones to better align with our innovations’ approach.
“Standardization is key to bringing Reincarnate’s innovations to the market. They support trust and are used by the market. We must consider if they have a potential for European or international application,” stated Stefan Wagmeister.
Understanding the ecosystem and the process of standardization
During the webinar, the ASI team shed light on how to get involved in standardization. There are European and international organizations like CEN, CENELEC, ISO, and IEC, and others like IEEE and ETSI, which either follow a national delegation principle or allow direct participation. Understanding these avenues is crucial for Reincarnate, as it helps identify applicable standards and decide whether to revise existing ones or create new ones for our innovative system.
In the standardization process, the journey begins with the idea and proposal (New Work Item Proposal), followed by feedback on the idea. Subsequently, Technical Commitees (experts/delegates nominated by CEN/ISO-members)prepare the standardization proposal, opening it up for comments on the draft standard. Once finalized, the standard can be published, utilized and refined based on inputs from other experiences or necessary updates.
Creating an EN standard involves a submission and review process that spans approximately 27 months.
Current status at Reincarnate
As of the start of 2024, partner ASI has gathered standardization ideas from the team behind Reincarnate. These insights will be taken into account in the forthcoming standardization workshops, aiming to collect, assess, and prioritize ideas to address identified project gaps. The objective is to evaluate and rank these ideas, focusing on developing the most concrete standards.
