Reincarnate at CBSC2025: Advancing Decision-Making for Circular Reuse
From June 1st to 3rd, Reincarnate proudly took part in the Circular Building Sector Conference 2025 (CBSC2025) in Lund, Sweden. This inaugural event, hosted by Lund University’s LTH Profile Area: Circular Building Sector, brought together researchers, professionals, educators, and policymakers from across Europe to explore how we can collectively transform the construction sector to become more sustainable, resilient, and circular.

Held at the stunning Skissernas Museum and Gamla Biskopshuset, the conference combined academic sessions with hands-on learning through site visits and panel discussions. The themes, ranging from material reuse and CO₂ reduction to digital innovation and circular design education, resonated strongly with the goals of the Reincarnate project.
Sharing Tools for Smarter Reuse Decisions
On behalf of Reincarnate, Brian van Laar, PhD researcher at TU Delft, presented the paper “Strategic Decision-Making in Uncertainty: Integrating Forward-Looking Scenario Planning and Multi-Criteria Analysis for Adaptive Reuse Projects.”

Co-authored with Angela Greco, Hilde Remøy, and Vincent Gruis, the paper introduces a practical, step-by-step framework for guiding adaptive reuse projects through complex and uncertain decisions. By combining three powerful methods: Cross-Impact Balance (CIB), Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and Fuzzy TOPSIS, the framework supports project teams in developing consistent future scenarios, prioritising stakeholder objectives, and selecting the most robust reuse strategies.
“To truly scale circularity, we need to rethink how we make decisions. Scenario thinking helps us navigate complexity, align stakeholders, and stay focused on long-term sustainability goals.”
Collaborative Learning and Circular Inspiration
The Reincarnate team was excited to engage with fellow researchers and practitioners from across disciplines, all united by a shared commitment to transforming the built environment. From discussions on policy shifts and material passports to the role of education and digital twins in circular design, CBSC2025 offered a rich mix of inspiration and challenge.
Reincarnate’s presence at the conference highlighted the importance of integrating scenario planning into real-world decision-making, not only to anticipate possible futures but also to co-create desirable ones.
“It was energising to connect with others working on the same mission. Events like CBSC2025 remind us that the circular transition is not just technical, it’s deeply human, and it starts with the decisions we make today.” – Brian van Laar
Next Steps: Collaboration & Dissemination
The full paper presented at the conference will be published soon. In the meantime, the Reincarnate team is eager to continue the conversation and explore how this framework can be tested, refined, and scaled in practice.
