The DIGICON 2024 conference, held on November 21 at the Gaszählerwerkstatt in Munich, brought together experts and innovators to explore how Industry 4.0 technologies are transforming the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sectors. Organized as a platform for discussing cutting-edge advancements such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modeling (BIM), and the Internet of Things (IoT), the event highlighted the intersection of technology and sustainability in shaping the future of construction.

Representing Reincarnate, Sabine Kruschwitz from partner Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung and Technische Universität Berlin delivered a presentation titled KI und Robotik im Dienst der Nachhaltigkeit: Beschleunigung innovativer Lösungen im Bausektor” (AI and Robotics in the Service of Sustainability: Accelerating Innovative Solutions in the Construction Sector). The talk emphasized how AI and robotics can be harnessed to develop environmentally conscious solutions in the construction industry, addressing critical challenges such as resource efficiency and emissions reduction.

Central to the presentation was SLAMD, an open-source AI tool designed to optimize the development of sustainable building materials. The tool, developed as part of the Reincarnate project, offers a scientific approach to reducing the environmental impact of construction practices. Its innovation was recognized with third place in DIGICON’s Innovation Award competition, underscoring its potential to drive meaningful change in the sector.

In reflecting on the conference, Sabine expressed her gratitude to the organizers, the DIGICON community, and her former colleague Dr. Christoph Völker (formerly BAM and until recently the main developer of the SLAMD software) for their support and engagement.

She remarked, “The recognition for SLAMD highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing sustainable development within construction.”

DIGICON 2024 provided a unique opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and industry leaders to share insights and collaborate on solutions that bridge technology and sustainability.
