The Sustainable Places Conference 2024, held in Luxembourg from September 23-25, focused on sustainability in the built environment, with a strong emphasis on innovative solutions from EU-funded projects. Reincarnate participated in three sessions, presenting its work on improving material reuse and digital solutions in the construction industry.

Data Management for Circularity Workshop

On September 24, Reincarnate participated in the Data Management for Enhanced Circularity in the Built Environment workshop. This session explored how digital tools can facilitate the reuse of materials and extend the life cycle of buildings. Samaneh Rezvani from DEMO Consultants introduced the Circular Potential Information Management (CP-IM) platform, a system that supports the identification and management of building materials, helping to assess their reuse potential throughout the building’s lifecycle. She showcased examples of the implementation of several IFC-based applications within the platform to facilitate the decision-making process Other projects, such as SUM4Re, CircularB, LIAISON, Regen EU and Drastic, also participated, discussing digital traceability and reuse of construction components.

Workshop on Digital Twins and Machine-Human Collaboration

During the Exploring Digital Twins, Machine-Human Collaboration, and Innovative Materials for Sustainable Construction workshop on September 25, 2024, André van Delft from DEMO Consultants shared insights on how digital twin technologies are being leveraged to improve the reuse and recycling of materials in construction. The session marked the first collaborative event of the TECH4EU Construction, a cluster bringing together six EU-funded projects, including InCUBE, HumanTech, BEEYONDERS, HeronEU, and RoBétArmé – all of which are working to digitize and automate the construction sector. The discussions focused on how digital twins, along with human-machine interaction, can optimize construction processes, reduce waste, and contribute to more sustainable building practices.

Circular and Bio-based Building Solutions

Reincarnate also participated in the Circular and Bio-based Building Solutions workshop on September 25th, which focused on integrating bio-based materials into construction to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Klaus Luig (3L) and André van Delft (DEMO Consultants) represented Reincarnate, contributing to the discussion on how circular practices can be applied alongside bio-based solutions to achieve climate neutrality in construction. Other EU-funded projects, such as BIO4EEB, EASI ZERo, MEZeroE, Wood2Wood, and DeCO2 Company, were also part of this session, sharing their approaches to reducing the environmental impact of the building sector

The Reincarnate Project aims to address the significant waste challenges in the construction industry, where construction and demolition waste accounts for 25-30% of all waste generated in the EU. By implementing digital solutions such as the CP-IM platform and promoting the reuse and recycling of materials, the project supports the shift toward a circular economy.

Being on another edition of the Sustainable Places Conference marks a new milestone for Reincarnate, being an ideal platform for the dissemination of our research, for EU project clustering and boosting networking between stakeholders of all types, increasing project visibility and impact.
